“His dancing speaks to the gods.”
in World on Sunday
Outwitting the Devil is inspired by a fragment from the Gilgamesh Epic, one of the earliest surviving works of world literature, that describes the admiration of Sumer’s semi-divine king for abundance and biodiversity, and which is therefore considered to be the world's first environmental poem. Featuring a cast of dancers from different cultures and generations, the performance begins with a large black wooden box, which suggests a table or coffin - the first and the last supper, reminiscent of the painting by the Australian artist, Susan Dorothea White who reformulates Leonardo Da Vinci's iconic work by solely depicting women and thereby challenging the assumptions of patriarchal culture, that are also found in Gilgamesh. In an epic of broken boards and fallen idols, Akram Khan fires a warning shot on the stage. Here the devil is, in fact, man himself - a creature capable of destroying everything, and everyone, around him.
